The Colorado Agricultural College had expanded along with the city. It was renamed Colorado State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, or Colorado A&M, in 1935 and then Colorado State University (CSU) in 1957.33 Today, CSU has not only gained a reputation internationally for clean energy research and for building upon the region’s focus on natural resources but has also become one of the city’s most important employers.34

Such a brief overview of the evolution of Fort Collins cannot begin to convey the rich and nuanced environmental history of the area.35 The lives of Fort Collins citizens in the early twenty-first century, however, are still influenced by the primary historical characteristics of the environment: the physical landscape of the Front Range, where the mountains meet the plains, and the vagaries of climate and weather, with their resulting effects on water supplies. These natural attributes shape work and play in Fort Collins, from research at CSU that reflects the university’s land-grant heritage to the production of sustainably brewed beer. Environmental stewardship of local resources connects the people of Fort Collins to each other and to the land on which they live.
